Bengaluru: 1,500 kg of beef seized, burnt by officials

Bengaluru: Over 1,500 kg of beef, which was seized while being transported illegally to Shivaji Nagar on Sunday, was burnt at a burial ground on Monday by police and Animal Welfare Board officials.

The police said that based on a tipoff, they intercepted a vehicle transporting the meat from Hospete to Shivaji Nagar Market and seized it.

An Animal Welfare Board official, Goutham Sharma, had stopped the goods vehicle covered with tarpaulin at Sadashiv Nagar traffic signal and detained three people. The accused, Aziz Baig, Farukh Pasha and Sheikh Sadiq, were charged under various sections of Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act and also under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

After taking the due permission, the police took the meat to the Summanahalli burial ground and burnt it on Monday. 

After an intense crackdown has started against illegal sale and transport of beef, those involved in the trade butcher it elsewhere and transport it illegally into the city, a police officer said. "It was illegal as the accused did not have the required documents to transport the meat," he said. Animal Welfare Board officials said that the illegal trade continues to thrive and beef from Ramanagar, Channarayapattana and even Hosapete in Ballari is reaching Shivaji Nagar.
