Ooty: A blast in the famed cordite factory at Aruvankadu (CFA) near here caused injuries to an employee on Monday. The century-old CFA which is a wing under the Defence ministry manufactures propellants to be supplied for the manufacturing of ammunition to the armed forces. Sources said that work was on as usual on Monday in the cordite factory.

When a team of higher officials was conducting a routine inspection in one of the units inside the factory premises, there was a sudden explosion in a room in the unit.

A thick layer of smoke engulfed the area with fire. Firemen rushed to the spot immediately and doused the fire. While members of the official team escaped unhurt, Prathaban (37), an employee who was inside the room when the tragedy struck, sustained minor injuries. He was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital for treatment, sources maintained.

Sources added that initial investigation showed that the hydraulic pressure built up in the particular room in the unit could have triggered the blast. Police in Aruvankadu are investigating into the incident.
