Bengaluru: Week-long safety drill at KIA concludes

Bengaluru: The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) six-day basic training programme to enhance the preparedness of Airport Emergency Handlers to respond to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) emergencies concluded with a mock drill at the Kempegowda International Airport on Saturday.
The mock drill showed a situation where chlorine gas leaks while being unloaded at the airport, which affects occupants and the people unloading gas containers. When alerted, the airport command post immediately presses the NDRF personnel into service and the area is sanitised.
The one-week programme, the 10th in the series, was conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The event was witnessed by 200 staff of relevant departments and agencies responsible for Operations and Maintenance at KIA.
The NDMA has embarked on a programme to train Airport Emergency Handlers at 12 major airports on CBRN emergencies to ensure that all first responders at these airports are equipped to manage emergencies adequately.
