Anantapur: Minor girl elopes, found dead in canal later

Victim was handed over to her parents by women and child welfare officials.

Anantapur: A minor girl was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a canal at BK Samudram in Anantapur district on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old girl had fallen in love with a person and had eloped with him on September 3 this year.

However, she was traced by the police and her parents who shifted her to a rescue home.

Sources said that the girl, a native of BK Samudram mandal was studying in Class X at a residential school in Gooty where she fell in love with a youth from her native village. After she eloped with the youth, the BK Samudram police had registered a missing case based on a complaint by her parents. The police traced the whereabouts of the runaway couple and produced them before the child welfare committee in Anantapur on September 10.

She was handed over to her parents by the women and child welfare wing after she expressed willingness to continue her academics and live with her parents.   

On October 11, she went to meet her beloved and her parents got wind of her plans.

The police were also alerted over possible clash between two families and groups in the village.

Three days later, the girl was found dead in the Tungabhadra high level main canal.

Anantapur DSP J.Venkatrao said police was alert to every possible situation when it came to a minor girl. A suspicious death case has been registered and investigation is on. Police teams are questioning the girl’s parents and also the family of the youth.

According to sources, the police has not ruled out honour killing in the case. The family of the youth is also under suspicion, sourses said.
