Thiruvananthapuram: Schools may not reach 200 working days target

Thiruvananthapuram: The schools in the state may not complete 200 working days this academic year, as proposed by the curriculum committee, due to the disruptions caused by rain and floods. Though the general education department plans to make up the loss by converting Saturdays also into working days, any further loss of academic days may complicate the issue.
The department had earlier rearranged the academic calendar to avoid losing the productive days.
Curriculum committee member N. Sreekumar told Deccan Chronicle that fewer number of working days were lost due to the floods this year compared to last year.
Some Saturdays will be made working days in the areas hit by the floods, he said.
It is planned to achieve the target of 200 working days and an academic calendar was released in the last academic year itself.
The working days included six Saturdays (August 17, 24, 31, October 5, January 4 and February 22).
The high school and higher secondary wings will have the same number of 203 working days.
The six Saturdays will be working days for the higher secondary section also. The vocational higher secondary education section will have 226 working days.
The Right to Education Act, 2009, has also proposed 200 working days for class 1 to 5 and 220 for class 6 to 8.
The Kerala High Court in 2016 had asked the state government to ensure 220 school days as prescribed under the Kerala Education Rules and the Right of the Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act.
