ALAPPUZHA: Ajaz, the civil police officer accused of burning his colleague, Soumya, to death has told the magistrate who recorded his statement that repeated rejection of love led to the revenge.

He said he had proposed to her multiple times, but the mother of three rejected his marriage offer. It hurt his ego, and he decided to finish her off and kill himself.

He also told the Ambalappuzha magistrate that he had no other motive and nobody else was involved.

Her mother Indira had earlier said Soumya had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh during the construction of her house, but he refused to take it back.

Ajaz was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here with 40 per cent burns after the horrific incident. Doctors said his condition remained extremely critical.

Soumya's funeral will be held only after the return of her husband from abroad.
