Karnataka Harbour Fire: Minister Assures Swift Relief to fishermen

Udupi: Women and Child Welfare Minister and Udupi District In-Charge Laxmi R Hebbalkar visited Gangolli Fishing Harbour on Friday in response to the recent fire incident.

Eight purse seine boats, 2 small boats, a dinghy, 2 fishing nets, and 2 bikes were damaged due to the fire on Nov 13.

Laxmi Hebbalkar held discussions with fisheries department officials and local fishermen to assess the extent of the damage.

"The estimated loss resulting from the fire is in the range of Rs 13-15 crore. We are committed to providing relief within the next 15 days," the Minister told reporters.

She offered words of comfort to the affected fishermen and boat owners who were present at the site.

"The complete destruction of nine boats and two vessels is a cause for deep concern. I will discuss the matter with the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and the Minister for Fisheries and Ports to ensure prompt relief measures," she affirmed.

The Minister emphasized the need to prevent similar incidents in the future, announcing plans to establish a fire brigade at the fishing port as a precautionary measure.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Vidya Kumari, District Superintendent of Police Dr K Arun were present.
