Thiruvananthapuram: 13 killed in landslides in Kuranchery, 14 in Malabar
In Kozhikode six persons were killed in landslides whereas in Malappuram district eight persons were killed.
Thrissur, Kottayam, Malabar: Several people are reported missing in the landslides in Kuranchery, Kuthiran and Cheruthuruthy in Thrissur on Thursday.
A total of 13 people in Kuranchery were killed and three were missing in the Harijan colony of Pallom in Cheruthuruthy as landslides damaged houses and trapped people inside.
As the landslides are repeating rescue operations have been called off in these regions. The traffic at Kuthiran has been completely blocked with a person dying as the got trapped under soil after landslide at the mountain climb. Severel trucks are also stuck under the soil in the accident.
Meanwhile, in Devikulam, four persons of a family died due to landslide over a house on Thursday morning. The landslide killed the family of Satheeshan who resides near the Little Flower School, Devikulam.
In Malabar, Heavy rain, landslides and landslips resulted in 14 deaths in Malabar region on Thursday alone. In Kozhikode six persons were killed in landslides whereas in Malappuram district eight persons were killed.
The six victims from Kozhikode include two children below five years. The Kakkayam Dam was opened and all rivers in Kozhikode, especially Iruvazhiji, Kallayippuzha , Punoor, Akalapuzha and Chaliyar are overflowing.
Seven persons of a family were killed due to earth slip at Odakkayam tribal colony near Areekode and a 30 year old woman was killed after a landslide near Chathallur near Edavanna. A landslide washed of large tracts of farm land at Ambayathod in Kottiyur and another inside the forest of Panniyam mala were the major incidents in Kannur on Thursday.
No causality occurred as the families in the region were shifted in advance. Many bridges of the Ghat region including Pamparappan bridge in Kottiyur are at the brink of collapse. In Wayanad heavy rains are lashing across the region and the Karappuzha reservoir also is opened. The heavy rains resulted in scaling up of water-level in flood areas with 24,743 persons shifted to relief camps. Mananthavadi taluk is isolated from other parts of the district. All the Ghat roads connecting the district with the other parts of the state are completely cut off.
