First tender for the AP medtech Zone was cancelled as the successful bidder did not fulfil the norms of having an escrow account as specified by the government.

Visakhapatnam: The Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (APTransco) will set up Asia’s largest industrial substation for the proposed Andhra Med Tech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam. This Med Tech Zone, which exclusively houses manufacturing units of medical equipment and is said to be South Asia’s first dedicated medical devices manufacturing park, is expected to draw very large volumes of electricity.

In the first phase, the substation will supply a load of about 25 MW each day to the industries before extending it manifold. The state government has earmarked about 226 acres near Nadupuru village in Pedagantyada mandal for the AMTZ and about 10 acres was allocated to the Transco for this sub-station.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) will erect two 33 x 11 KV substations on about 2 acres in the same area, each costing Rs 1 crore. These would supply stepped down voltage to the industries from Transco’s substation. Annually, around Rs 20,000 crore worth of medical equipment, which is about 70 per cent of the country’s requirement, is imported into India. But the Andhra Med Tech Zone, housing high capital-intensive common scientific facilities, will help reduce the cost of manufacturing in India itself.
