Short spells of rain in Chennai expected

Chennai: After rains stop in west coast and westerlies become weak, Chennai is expected to get small spells of rain by Sunday. Though temperatures are likely to soar, thunderstorms might bring some relief to the city.

On Saturday, Chennai received an average rainfall of around 2 cm, while Ennore and parts of Tiruvallur received 3 cm of rainfall. Krishnagiri, Vellore and parts of Kancheepuram also received around 2 cm of rainfall each. Regional Meteorological Center officials said that the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy in Chennai.

“Rains or thundershowers are likely to occur during evening or night hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 38 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius respectively in Chennai till Sunday,” said RMC officials.

Weather blogger Pradeep John said that thunderstorms are likely to converge in Vellore and neighbouring districts bringing short spells of rain. Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram is also to receive spells by Sunday, he said. 

The level of water reservoirs in Tamil Nadu has been highest in Red Hills with storage of around 1,269 mcft, however, Cholavaram reservoir is only 68 mcft. The rains have not done good to most of the water reservoir yet and only Poondi has received 2 mm of rainfall and records a storage of 178 mcft.
