Ramzan ushered in with religious fervour

With the crescent being observed on Friday, Ramzan was celebrated today.

Chennai: Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated with religious fervour by the Muslims across Tamil Nadu and special prayers marked the occasion.

Muslims observed the fast and penance during the last weeks, celebrated the conclusion of the penance on the day of Ramzan and on the 1st day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, by helping the poor members of the society. With the crescent being observed on Friday, Ramzan was celebrated today.

 Special prayers were held at the mosques emphasising the significance of mutual affection, kind-heartedness ever ready to help. The Muslims clad in new clothes, distributed sweets, and greeted each other.

 Prayers were offered at various mosques as well as designated prayer spots in different cities of the State including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Vellore.

 A host of dignitaries including Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and DMK leader M. K. Stalin among others extended their greetings to the people.

 “Eid-ul-Fitr brings to a close the month of Ramadan. It is a festival of merriment and joy. On this happy occasion let us practise tolerance towards fellow citizens and promote communal harmony in society by adopting the path of prayer, kindness and generosity,” Mr. Purohit said in his message. 

Mr. Palaniswami said following the footsteps of late Chief Minister ‘Amma’ (J. Jayalalithaa), his government had this year distributed 5,145 tons rice to over 3,000 mosques spread across the State for preparing gruel during the Ramzan month. “Let peace prevail in the world,” he said in a statement.

 DMK working president Stalin wished for the well-being and progress of the people of Islam and said their lifestyle should improve in all aspects.
