Hyderabad: Hyderabad native Ahmed Iqbal Jahangir is recuperating in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Christchurch, after sustaining injuries in Friday’s shooting at two mosques. His relatives who flew in from Australia put up a video showing Mr Iqbal doing a ‘salaam’ to his mother, following reports that he had succumbed to his injuries.

His brother Mohammed Tanveer, who stays in Australia, rushed to New Zealand and is attending on Mr Ahmed in the hospital.

Mr Jamshed Jahangir, who stays in Hyderabad, said, “Iqbal is fine and underwent a second operation early on Saturday morning. We have been in touch with his wife and the Indian embassy in New Zealand who have been updating us regularly.”

Mr Ahmed is said to have suffered two bullet injuries, one in his chest and another in his shoulder. Doctors performed surgeries to remove the fragments and he was stated to be recuperating.

Mr Mohammed Khursheed Jahangir, another brother of Mr Iqbal Ahmed, received his visa on Saturday morning to travel to Christchurch. “I am searching for flights and will be with my brother soon,” Mr Khusheed said and thanked the external affairs ministry and MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi for their help in procuring the visa.

The Jahangir family has relatives across the city who reached out to the family after hearing the news of the shooting.
