B Tech students rally against mining

The rally which was flagged off from Kozhikode Tuesday morning reached Alappuz-ha Wednesday evening.

Thiruvananthapuram​: Following furore over mining at Alappad, three B. Tech students from College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, Muhammed Niyas, P. V. Abubakar Rashad, and A. Nizamuddeen, members of CET Cycling Club,  decided to undertake a cycle rally to create awareness against the sand mining. The rally which was flagged off from Kozhikode Tuesday morning reached  Alappuz-ha Wednesday evening.  

As the news of the rally spread through social media, P. Junaid, a sociology student from Manjeri, S. N. Muhammed Ali Jawahar, an engineering student of Muslim Association College of Engineering, Venjaramoodu, engineering diploma students from Kozhikode, K. Abhiram and C. P. Mohammed Aquil and ICAI student A. S. Nikhil from Kazhakoottam joined them.

“Our intention is to highlight the ill-effects of sand mining before the general public. We were able to interact with various people ask on this,”  said Niyas.

CET Cycling Club member Gopi Krishnan told DC that the new generation should be aware of the threats of sand mining.

“The general public should join their hands together for the people of Alappad. Our cycle rally reached Alappad on Wednesday night and in a day it will reach the capital city”, said Gopi Krishnan.

The team also expressed happiness on the decision to stop sea washing at Alappad following high level discussions led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
