Peddapalli: Faced with heavy loss as the standing paddy crop was destroyed by pests and insects, a farmer burnt his crop in anger at Chandapally village in this district on Thursday.

Thota Peddanna had cultivated a fine variety of paddy on his two acres by taking loan from private money lenders. Now, repayment would be a problem.

When he found the paddy crop was infected with pests and insects, he tried various methods as advised by local agriculture officials, but these did not help.

Peddanna said he along with some other farmers in the village cultivated a fine variety of paddy based on advice from experts. Suddenly, the crops were infected with pests and insects.

“We used insecticides and pesticides at high costs to protect our fields. But the standing crops started wilting. I hope the state government will help me and the other farmers who faced a huge loss and bail them out of their present plight,” he said.
