Roads laid with plastic waste in Pudukkottai district

She said that women\'s self help groups recycled 21,184-kg of plastic waste and supplied this to the departments concerned.

PUDUKKOTTAI: Women's self help groups of Pudukkottai district have paved the way for the highways authorities by supplying recycling plastic waste which the highways department is using to lay a 30-km road across the district, according to its collector B. Umamaheswari.

She said that women's self help groups recycled 21,184-kg of plastic waste and supplied this to the departments concerned.

Using this, the highways authorities laid 30-km road in Thirumayam, Ponnamaravathi Arantangi, Kundrandaarkovil, and Viralimalai panchayat union areas, she added.

The collector said that out of the total sanction of Rs 17.16 crore , 23,657 women's self help were given Rs 7.32 crore worth subsidised bank loans in the last three years.

Under the community investment fund scheme, 2,280 WSHGs were given loan assistance to the tune of `9.84 crore in the last three years.

Members of WSHGs are making cloth bags and supplying them to commercial concerns, she added.
