Chennai: State Law Minister C.V. Shanmugam has said that additional documents to support the case of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy CM O. Panneerselvam have been submitted to the Election Commission in Delhi to redeem the AIADMK symbol of ‘Two Leaves,’ and expressed confidence that the party would get back its symbol.

EC is meeting in a couple of days to discuss claims by rival factions –one led by EPS-OPS combine and another by Sasikala-TTV - for the symbol.

“We will defeat attempts by the rival group and put forth our arguments in such a way that our case will be vindicated….we will prove that we are the real AIADMK and redeem the party symbol,” Mr Shanmugam told reporters at the airport here on Sunday before boarding the flight to the national capital.

“We have submitted all necessary legal documents to EC to get back the symbol,” he said adding that the opposite camp is trying to delay the inquiry. “But such plots will be defeated,” he added.

Chances for breakaway group to return
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters at the Chennai airport on Sunday, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker and senior AIADMK leader M. Thambidurai, said there is a likelihood of those who broke away from AIADMK returning to the parent organisation.

“This is what we are expecting. All of them are AIADMK cadres and followers of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa,” he said without naming anyone in particular.

“Protecting the party and government is our prime objective. As this is the birth centenary year of our founder, it is important to safeguard the party for the sake of which it was founded by MGR. This is our duty… this is what our party cadres are expecting”, he said.
