Thanjavur: Election Commission late Sunday deferred the poll to the Thanjavur Assembly constituency after following reports of alleged money distribution by candidates. Besides, large sums of cash were also seized, reports said.

The Commission has directed that the elections in Thanjavur would be held on May 23, when the polls in Aravakurichi in Karur district are also to be held in similar circumstances. The counting of votes will take place at 0800 hours on May 25.An EC official said the polling in Thanjavur had been deferred so that the vitiating effect of the money power caused by the distribution of cash and gifts to the voters loses its intensity and a better atmosphere emerges for the conduct of free and fair election.
