Hyderabad: Scolded over phone, girl ends life

Hyderabad: An Intermediate student committed suicide after she was pulled up by her college for bringing a cellphone.

Jayalakshmi, 17, a second year Intermediate student of Sri Chaitanya College at Balapur Chow-rasta had been taken to the principal’s office with the phone. He took custody of the phone and called her parents.

At about 11 am Mr Yadaiah, her father, meet the principal who told him about the issue and that Jayalakshmi had secured less marks in the recent tests. Mr Yadaiah consoled her daughter and told her, “It’s fine, don't take this matter seriously.”

Jayalakshmi returned home from college at about 3.30 pm as usual. When her mother asked why the principal had called them, Jayalakshmi reportedly said, “they called all the parents whose children got less marks, it's not that serious.”

Some time later, Jayalakshmi told her sister-in law Sandhya that she would decorate the house for her niece’s birthday after taking a nap.

Around 6 pm Ms Sandhya went to wake Jayalakshmi’s room but the door was bolted from the inside, which was a regular practice. In spite of knocking on the door for a long time, there was no response. They forced the door open and found Jayalakshmi’s body hanging from a ceiling fan.

“She had not even changed the college dress. Because she is our only daughter, we had pampered Jayalakshmi. Her father gave her whatever she wanted. Even if she wanted something late at night, her father used to out and bring it for her,” said Ms Parvathi, Jayalakshmi’s mother.

“She always secured good marks. We gifted her the mobile phone for Dasara and she never carried it to college, I don’t know why she took it today, Ms Parvathi said.

Jayalakshmi’s parents migrated to Hyderabad from Siddipet some 30 years ago. Mr Yadaiah is a scrap merchant and has a shop in Balapur. Jayalakshmi has an elder brother who is married with child and a younger brother,

One of the relatives said Jayalakshmi’s marriage had fixed in the summer. She said Jayalakshmi wanted to join the Army and used to get up at 5 am and go for a job.

Her body was taken to the Osmania General Hospital mortuary and returned to the parents after the postmortem, police said.
