PUDUKKOTTAI: The All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA), affiliated to the CPI(M), expressed concern over the action by the Tamil Nadu National Law School, Chennai, which punished a student who allegedly misbehaved with some girl students, by directing him to undertake social service for three months, following the recommendations of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the special state conference of the AIDWA held at Pudukkottai on Saturday. It also pointed out that even though the student admitted to the misbehavior, the administration attempted to “protect the erring male student.”

A student who was involved in an alleged sexual assault incident being directed to undergo three months social service as punishment that too in a National Law School is highly ludicrous, the AIDWA said.

Moreover, the IPC ruled that the sexual assault cases are a punishable offence, but the ICC's directions to undergo three months social service was highly ridiculous. It wanted the National Law School authorities to punish the accused student in a proper way, said, S, Levantine state president of AIDWA.

She said in another resolution the conference also requested the Central Government to check the activities of the private microfinance companies numbering more than 5,000 across the country and provide loan assistance to the women self-help groups.

Among others, the AIDWA state general Secretary P. Suganthi and Coimbatore CPI(M) Lok Sabha member P R Natarajan, spoke at the meeting.
