THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, 77, hopes that the latest Supreme Court order in his case will be a deterrent against custodial torture by the police.

“More than the compensation, I was seeking action against the cops who trapped me in the case. The court verdict has confirmed my contention that the cops had erred,” he said.

Mr Narayanan, who has been fighting the case for over the last two decades, said that he had sought only a CBI probe into the conspiracy behind the case, but was happy that the court ordered a judicial probe. “I do not want to make any comment on the conspiracy now,” he said.

The Supreme Court order on Friday also said that Mr Narayanan could proceed with the civil suit he had filed seeking Rs 1-crore compensation.

However, he said he would decide whether to press the case further after consulting his lawyer. He was yet to decide how to utilise the compensation of '50 lakh, which the state government has to give him in eight weeks.

Then DySP K.K. Joshua, who was also a member of the investigation team, said that there were about 10 officers of various ranks in the team and that it was surprising that the CBI implicated him in the report, though his duty was just to prepare the case diary as per the instructions of the superiors.

He also pointed out that even the Intelligence Bureau officials had quizzed him. Former special branch inspector S. Vijayan said he would not comment about the matter now.
