Bengaluru: Swap kidney transplants were done between Columbia Asia Hospital Hebbal and Suguna Hospital Rajajinagar on Tuesday. A patient from Columbia Asia Hospital, Mr. Santosh (name changed) was transplanted a kidney donated by Ms Aparna Krishna (name changed), while Mr Krishna received a kidney donated by Ms Rekha Santosh.

It was for the first time in South India that a transplant swapping has been done between hospitals. A green corridor was created between 8.15 am and 8.45 am, and the entire transplant surgery was completed by 10 am successfully. Currently, the recipients and donors are healthy and recovering.

A team from Columbia Asia Hospital, led by Dr Ajit K. Huligol, performed the transplant surgery.

Dr Huligol, Director and Chief Transplant Surgeon, said, “Usually the swap transplants take place within hospitals due to logistics issue. But this is the first of its kind in South India where the swapping was done between two different hospitals. All hospitals should come together for such causes, at least the hospitals in the city. It will be easier and many patients will benefit from this.”

Dr S. Sudhakar, Consultant Nephrologist, Columbia Asia Hospital Hebbal, also said that it’s a way forward surgery. “We expect more people to come forward for organ donation. The couples should have a mutual understand. Medical and social aspects have to sync for the couples coming from different socio-economic backgrounds,” he said.
