HYDERABAD: No student has dropped out of the IIT-Hyderabad in two years, unlike in the more illustrious Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur and Madras IITs. Over these two years, 1,782 students dropped out of these institutions of excellence.

Asked what the Hyderabad campus does differently to retain its students, IIT-H director Uday B. Desai said, “The small things that we do to instil confidence among students, especially first-year under-graduates, are reaping benefits.”

The IIT-H has an early intervention committee comprising faculty members who speak to students and try to ascertain any difficulties that they may be facing about studies and propose ways to overcome them.

“After the first-year semester results are out, we counsel students who get low marks to instil a sense of confidence in them,” Mr Desai said.

Asked why students dropped out of other prestigious institutes in the past, Dr Desai said no specific reason could be attributed. In most cases, homesickness factor and not being able to withstand the intense competition prompts students to leave, he said.

The IITs at Roorkee, BHU Varanasi, Ropar and Mandi also recorded zero dropout last year. On other campuses too, the dropout rate fell last year compared to the year before. While 1,126 students left the IITs in 2014-15, the figure came down to 656 in 2015-16. IIMs, on the other hand, fared better. Only 49 students dropped out from the 13 IIMs nationwide.
