Visakhapatnamm: In the process of cleaning the beaches in Vizag, NGO India Youth For Society (IYFS) has collected 8.8 tonnes of alcohol bottles from the beach roads in the past month.

The drive revealed how said beaches were being ruined by the people as apart from the alcohol bottles, the activists also collected 769 kg of microplastics and three kg of plastic spoons from either side of the roads.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner M Hari Narayanan had also participated in the drive and was found assisting the members of the society in cleaning the city’s beach roads.

Mr Hari Narayanan said, “This clearly reflects the people lack of a sense of civic responsibility. Dustbins have been made available. However, nobody seems to be using them. A large number of people consume alcohol in their cars — which happens to be a transgression in itself — and then litter roads with empty bottles.”
