Hyderabad: The condition of most of the unclaimed vehicles has deteriorated to such an extent that they can only be sold to scrap dealers. The unclaimed vehicles are generally sold in scrap because of the negligence of authorities and lack of monitoring by the higher authorities, says RTA former additional commissioner.

As many as 10,480 abandoned and unclaimed vehicles were auctioned in the city in the last three years, among which 9,473 vehicles were sold to scrap and only 1,007 vehicles were serviceable vehicles. Regional Transport Authorities (RTA) have fixed a price of RS 2,37,09,500 and the realised price was  Rs 2,96,10,000 and the benefit amount was '59,00,800 from 2015 upto August 30, 2017.

Hyderabad city police has released a notification in the month of June, 2017, for putting 1,548 abandoned and unclaimed vehicles for public auction at Shiv Kumar Lal, Police Stadium Grounds, Goshamahal, and Hyderabad. Most of the vehicles in 2017 went to scrap and few are left for auction.City police gives the notification six months ahead of the public auction so that if any person has any objection or owners may file an application before the commiss-ioner of police to claim the vehicle within a period of six months from the date of notification, failing which the vehicles will be auctioned.

Mr C.L.N. Gandhi, retired Additional Transport Commissioner, said, ‘’Vehicle is siezed for violations like registeration certificate, driving license or not having a tax payment on the vehicles. If the tax is not paid, the owner should be given a notice and if he doesn’t respond to the notice a demand notice should be sent to him but if still the person doesn’t respond, then the vehicle should be aunctioned.”

“The procedure of the auction sometimes takes years because of the lack of monitoring mechanism for these unclaimed vehicles and the higher authorities don’t bother about these vehicles due to which the vehicles get rusted in the police stations for years,” he added.
