Chennai: A. G. Perarivalan, serving life sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was on Wednesday shifted from Vellore central prison to Puzhal jail here to enable him to undertake treatment at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here.

The 45-year-old convict, whose death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 2014 by the Supreme Court, has been suffering from rheumatic arthritis, hypertension and urological problems

Officials said Perarivalan was transferred from Vellore central prison to the Puzhal central prison here for one month. Escorted by police personnel, Perarivalan left Vellore around noon and reached Chennai by the evening.
They said he was transferred to the Puzhal prison since doctors at the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital at Adukamparai referred him to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital  as it did not have a Rheumatology Department. This is not the first time that Perarivalan is transferred to Puzhal prison for the sake of treatment. Earlier he was transferred in 2015 for the same purpose.

In 2015 too, Perarivalan was shifted to the Puzhal Prison and underwent treatment at  Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Perarivalan went back to the Vellore prison in October after completion of his 2-month long parole period. He was granted parole on August 24 to be with his ailing father.
