Guntur: Legislators Mohammad Mustafa (YSRC, Guntur East) and M. Venugopala Reddy (TD, Guntur West), together asked the residents to cooperate with the Guntur Municipal Corporation to get the top rank in the Swachh Sarvekshan 2018. GMC conducted an awareness programme on Swachh Sarvekshan at the market centre here on Wednesday. The two legislators and GMC officials said Guntur was not ranked in the Centre’s Swachh survey of 75 cities in 2016.

The city was ranked 118 in the survey of 434 cities conducted this year. They appealed to the people to help improve the rankings by keeping the city clean and green. Mr Mustafa expressed dissatisfaction over the poor sanitary conditions in his constituency and sought improvement. He asked the GMC to put an end to the practice for throwing garbage on the roads and impose fines on those who litter. He asked the public to keep the public places like streets and parks clean like their houses which would help GMC get a better rank in the Swachh Sarvekshan.

Mr Venugopala Reddy recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated ‘Pehle Souchalay Baadme Devalay’ (first toilet then temple) and asked the residents to keep the city clean without public defecation, urination and littering. He said that women played an important role in keeping their houses clean and green and sought their help to keep streets and roads of their colonies clean. GMC commissioner Anuradha said that of the 2,000 corporation employees, 1,600 were sanitation staff who were serving a city of 7 lakh population. She said that recently five compactors were placed to remove garbage from the city and door-to-door collection of dry and wet waste had started.

She said that teams from New Delhi will come to Guntur to inspect sanitation and sought public cooperation with GMC to get top rank in Swachh Sarvekshan.
