BIAL: Expansion plans to have artistic touch

Bengaluru: The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru has kick-started a Rs 13,000-crore expansion plan  with multiple initiatives aimed at transitioning itself towards becoming a hub for art, culture and entertainment besides being a transit point for air travelers.

In his presentation at an art symposium, Mr Hari Marar, MD & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Ltd, emphasised that the airport’s expansion plans would be in the larger context of artistic engagement.

Mr Marar, who is also responsible for the management of the airport, said the expansion is expected to meet the travellers’ growing needs.

“Bengaluru Airport has tripled in size within 10 years of its inception by handling 27 million passengers a year from 9 million passengers a year when it began

operations. Traffic studies reveal that over the next 11 years, the airport’s capacity will triple to handle 80 million passengers a year,” he said, adding that he expects to complete expansion plans within 30 months.

Terminal 2 to replicate ‘Garden City’ model

Terminal 2 is designed to replicate the garden city tagline of Bengaluru. From a sustainability standpoint, the terminal will be water neutral, waste neutral, power neutral. The ceilings of the terminal is also constructed to uphold gardening properties. Mr. Hari said, “It must celebrate the city’s identity, to become a window and gateway of the amalgamation of the local and global cultures.” The work for the terminal is expected to be operational from 1st April 2021.
