Malampuzha dam shutters raised from 39 cm to 45 cm

Disaster management officials here allayed the fears of a repeat flood in the town as the shutters of the dam were raised in time.

Palakkad: The Malampuzha dam shutters were raised from 39 cm to 45 cm on Monday following heavy rain in the district on Monday. A landslide also occurred in the catchment area at Velampotta near Aanakkallu. Collector D. Balamurali declared a holiday for all the educational institutions in the district on Tuesday.

At Santhi colony at Olavakode, there was a sudden flooding in the streets and house premises on Monday morning as a retaining wall near the railway station that prevents water from entering the residential area collapsed.

This shocked the residents  as they had started recovering from the floods that struck the area on Thursday last after the dam shutters were raised from 90 cm to 150 at 1.30 a.m.

The Sundaram colony on the side of the irrigation canal at Chunnambuthara in the town was alerted as the canal flow reached the brim due to the water from the dam.

The flow of water in     the Mukkai and Kalpathi rivers also increased. The Mukkai bridge was submerged on   Monday night.
