Visakhapatnam: Organ donation can save lives and help individuals with debilitating illnesses recover to having productive and fulfilling lives, said health minister Kamineni Srinivas.

On Saturday, Mr. Srinivas flagged off a walkathon, held to create awareness about organ donation from RK Beach to YMCA in Visakhapatnam.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Srinivas felt there was a great need to educate people about the concept of organ donation. “Lakhs of people are dying each year due to non-availability of organs. To turn the situation around, we should motivate more people to pledge towards organ donation,” he added.

The programme, which was jointly organised by Pinnacle Hospitals, Jeevan Daan and Abhayam Kidney Care Trust, had seen the presence of top officials of the district, hundreds of students and other enthusiasts. Vizag MP K. Haribabu said one person can save 8 more lives by donating his organs after his/her death. “Organ donation is slowly catching up. But we need to educate people about the benefits of organ donation and make everyone part of this programme,” Mr. Haribabu added.
