Congressman shot at in Hyderabad, grabs firearm

Police said the shooting was the outcome of a land dispute.

Hyderabad: A Congress leader who was shot at thrice and chased by two persons managed to thwart them and survived. Police said the shooting was the outcome of a land dispute.

Two persons on a motorcycle fired at Congress leader D. Yadgiri, 48, near his house at Mallikar-junanagar, Bowenpally before noon on Saturday. The duo fired thrice, but missed Mr Yadgiri who suffered minor injuries. He fought the assailants and snatched their firearm and ran into a hospital next to his home.

The attackers followed Congerss leader D. Yadgiri there with another gun but could not open as he had entered the doctor’s cabin. The duo abandoned their weapon and fled,

Police found that one of the suspects, identified only as Babu, a realtor from Alwal, had tried to kill Mr Yadgiri over a dispute over a four-acre parcel of land in Alwal. “The attackers fired three bullets but did not strike Mr Yadgiri. Two brushed past his body, one bullet missed the target. Mr Yadgiri suffered bleeding injury and he got immediate treatment,” said North Zone DCP B. Sumathi. Police said the incident took place between 11 am and 11.30 am. Yadgiri was coming out of his house.

“After the bullets were fired, the victim ran into a nearby hospital. Later he came to the police station and registered a complaint,” said Hyderabad police commissioner M. Mahender Reddy. He said the assailants had tried to chase Mr Yadgiri but later fled. Police officials have recovered CCTV footage of the incident and three empty cartridges from the spot. Cops have booked cases for attempt to murder and under the Arms Act.
