Centre demands 2BHK beneficiary list

Delay in shortlisting could affect progress of 70,000 units.

Hyderabad: The Centre has made it clear to the state government that it would not release its quota of funds to construct double bedroom/ hall/kitchen (2BHK) houses in the state until the government of Telangana shortlist the list of beneficiaries.

The delay in shortlisting the beneficiaries could affect the progress of about 70,000 2BHK houses in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits alone and one lakh dwelling units across the state. The government had sanctioned 1,400 houses for each of the 119 Assembly constituencies in the State. Of the 2.70 lakh units target, the State government is committed to completing 1 lakh houses under GHMC limits and another 1 lakh units in rural pockets by the end of December.

The cost of the housing units vary from rural to urban areas. In rural areas, the cost of each unit is Rs 5.30 lakh and Rs 7 lakh in GHMC limits.
According to highly placed sources in the housing department, the government has so far has cleared by bills worth Rs 5,500 crore which was majorly funded by the  Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO).

Against the pending bills worth Rs 1,000 crore, the department has recently paid Rs 50 crore to the GHMC which has been executing the project in the city and Rs 250 crore (total due Rs 400 crore) in other districts in Telangana.  

Out of about 1.90 lakh 2BHK houses grounded about 45,000 dwelling units in GHMC area and 1 lakh houses in remaining districts of Telangana have already completed 95 per cent of their construction and the remaining have been in various stages of construction since the August 2018.

Officials in the housing department claimed that the instructions were given to the district collectors to shortlist the beneficiaries at the earliest.

They said that the department has asked the filter the shortlisted beneficiaries in the GHMC limits to avoid duplication and a final call will be taken by the state government prior to sending the list of beneficiaries to the Centre.
