Focus on research, serve mankind, VP tells medicos

Asserting that doctors have an obligation to make the nation healthy so that it will become wealthy in future.

Puduchreey: Addressing the ninth annual convocation of the Jawaharlal institute of post-graduate medical education and research (JIPMER) here on Friday, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, said, “Quality and compassion coupled with ethics and equity should be the guiding principles and touchstones of progress of young doctors.”

“Our country is in a transformational phase. We are focusing more and more on expanding basic services, including health care to all our citizens and we are seeking to actively forge public private partnerships to accelerate progress,” said Naidu.Access to quality healthcare is not yet universal nor is high quality treatment affordable to many segments in society.

“To deliver quality health care to everyone and make it affordable, the Government of India has initiated the ambitious 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana' recently. It is an unprecedented initiative in scope and scale,” he added.

The Vice-President also expressed hope that effective implementation of this programme can change the heath care landscape in India.

Asserting that doctors have an obligation to make the nation healthy so that it will become wealthy in future, Naidu reminded the young graduates that the purpose of science and research is to serve mankind in a better way, and urged them to focus more on research.

He appreciated the institution for managing a hospital that caters to the poorest of poor where 90 percent of treatment provided totally free of cost. He added that JIPMER ranked the sixth best hospital in the country, and was a great boon to the poor of the region including those from neighbouring states.

The Vice-President also lauded the efforts of the faculty and staff to make the institution a premier medical institution in the country including innovations made in telemedicine and teleconferencing services.

Addressing the function, J.P. Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, mentioned that he has watched with a sense of satisfaction the growth of this institute, as it retained its position as second best Institution of national importance, imparting both undergraduate and post-graduate education, second only to AIIMS, New Delhi.

While delving at length into the Ayushman Bharath Insurance and wellness programme, Nadda said that JIPMER should take a lead in the effective implementation of this program.

He commended the institute for establishing the offshore campus at Karaikal. He was of the view that the students have secured admission to JIPMER on the basis of a tough All India level competition, and urged them to dedicate their life to the service of the poor in addition to achieving personal excellence and fame.

Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, Members of Parliment N Gogulakrishnan, R Radhakrishnan, Health minister Malladi Krishna Rao, Leader of Opposition N Rangasamy, were among those who participated in the function.
