Bengaluru: As part of the National Organ Donation Day, cyclists and bikers took out a 40 km long awareness rally on Sunday morning to raise awareness about organ donation.

As many as 76 doctors, entrepreneurs and members working for corporates took part. They got on their cycles and motorbikes started from three leading hospitals. It was organised by the Young Indians CII Ride4Life.

Laeeq Ali, Chapter Chair Young Indians Bengaluru, said,  “Supported by the Bengaluru traffic police with Manipal Hospital, Sankara Eye Hospital and Sakra World Hospital, through Ride4Life we looked to raise awareness on this sensitive topic and also demonstrate the ability to these organisations to collaborate to create a seamless corridor when needed to make organs available.”

Organ donation and transplantation has helped save million of lives, but there are still myths that prevent effective harvesting, he said.

“We believe that miracles cannot cure the blind. Gift an Organ needs to be a family tradition to eliminate one million who are completely blind from corneal blindness,” said Dr Anand Balasubramaniam, Sankara Eye Hospital Bengaluru.

“Every Sunday we ride for fun, today we are glad to have pedaled for 40 km in support of organ donation. It is important for all citizens to realise that resolving issues is better than reporting and it is up to us to ensure no organ goes waste,” said Sampath Ramanujam, a cycling enthusiast and member of Zest Pedal Cycling Group.

Young Indians CII Bengaluru would continue to promote this Gift an Organ through a curated panel discussion and sessions across Bengaluru to ensure that at least 1,00,000 pledge their organs.
