Kochi: The state government  filed an appeal in the  High Court on Monday against the single bench ordering a CBI probe into the murder of Youth Congress leader S.P. Shuhaib near Mattannur in Kannur district.  The government  submitted that the single bench   issued the order without examining the facts connected with the investigation which was  progressing correctly. The single bench had  ordered a CBI probe  after castigating the  local police probing  the murder.   C.P. Mohammad and S.P. Razia, parents of Shuhaib, had filed a petition seeking a CBI probe.

The petitioners submitted that the investigation of the local police cannot be free and fair as CPM leaders were  involved in the incident. Shuhaib, president of the Youth Congress Mattanur block committee, was hacked to death on February 12 by a group of alleged CPM workers.  The local police has arrested 11 persons. The CPM Kannur district committee has expelled four members from the party for their involvement in the incident.
