Hyderabad: Cannon found near Charminar

The cannon is believed to have been cast in the 1780s by Monsieur Raymond.

The seven-foot long cannon that was found when an old building was demolished for road widening at Hussaini Alam to Koka-ki-Tatti road in city.

Hyderabad: An ancient cannon was found during digging to widen the Hussaini Alam to Koka-ki-Tatti road in the Charminar division on Saturday.
The GHMC in order to widen the road had demolished an old building. The cannon  was found by a worker  while  digging the ground.

Witnesses informed the Charminar police of the find. Hundreds of people gathered at the spot as news of the find spread quickly. Heritage enthusiast Mohd Safiullah said that it was a “very  interesting  and  significant  find”.

The cannon  was  cast at  Gunfoundry  under  the  guidance  of  the  Frenchman  Monsieur Raymond  in  the  1780s.  Similar cannons  are  available  at  the  gun park, he said.

The Charminar police informed the state archaeology department to preserve the weapon. Police moved in to protect the find.

Some sources had earlier claimed that it belonged to the army of the emperor Aurangzeb and was used to attack the Golconda fort at the time of the Qutb Shahi dynasty.
