WARANGAL: A farmer tried to commit suicide during Prajavani, a programme to hear people’s grievances, at the district collector’s office in Jangaon by pouring petrol on himself on Monday.

He alleged that the mandal revenue officer (MRO) had failed to update his data in the land record updation programme.

The farmer, Mr C. Venkatesh of Gummadavelli in Lingala Ghanpur mandal, had repeatedly visited the revenue officials and appealed to them to update his data in the records.

He owns one acre of land which he has been cultivating for many years.

However, the revenue department would not update the land in his name in the records.

His appeal was ignored even after he filed a grievance at the district collectorate during the Prajavani programme.

Disheartened by the lack of response, Mr Venkatesh tried to set himself on fire on Monday.

The police who were present immediately took him into custody and conducted a counselling session.

The police said that he was mentally disturbed because of this issue. The district collector has called for an investigation into the issue and has said that strict action will be taken against the revenue officials concerned, if they are found guilty.
