Bengaluru: K.R. Puram police opened fire in retaliation at two rowdies, who were trying to evade arrest, on Kadugodi Main Road early Sunday.

The police were on the lookout for the duo for their involvement in the killing a rowdy of rival gang.

The accused, Naveen Kumar and Girish, sustained bullet injuries on their legs and have been admitted to K.R. Puram government hospital. Police said that constable Muniraj was attacked by Girish when he tried to arrest him. Muniraju was admitted to Satya Sai hospital and is said to be out of danger. Deputy Commissioner of Police Whitefield Division Abdul Ahad said a police jeep was also damaged when Naveen fired three rounds at the vehicle.

The duo had on October 14 abducted a rival gang member Chethan and taken him to Hoskote, where they killed him and set fire to the body.

The K.R. Puram police had arrested six people in this connection, but the two were on the run. However on Sunday, based on credible information, K.R. Puram Inspector Jayaraj and his team intercepted the duo on Kadugodi Main Road, while they were going on a motorcycle. When they realised that a police jeep was tailing them, Naveen pulled out his pistol and fired at the vehicle, which damaged the backside windshield and the driver stopped the jeep.

Jayaraj jumped out of the vehicle and opened fire at Naveen and neutralised him, police said.

Constable Muniraju then chased Girish, who was trying ot flee. Girish attacked him with dagger. Then the inspector fired at Girish at his leg. All the three injured were later shifted to different hospitals and the police recovered a country made pistol and a dagger from the spot.

Who is Naveen Kumar?
Naveen Kumar was involved in murder of Sirapura Srinivas, husband of former BBMP corporator in March 2014 and was arrested under Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act.

Naveen Kumar has over nine criminal cases, including two murder cases, pending against him. The K.R. Puram police had opened a rowdy sheet against him. Girish also has over half a dozen cases against him, the police said.
