Campus posters on J&K: Students asked to explain

Thiruvarur: The Registrar of the Central University, Tiruvarur (CUT), has issued notices to a group of 30 students of CUT including from Jammu and Kashmir (J and K)seeking their explanation for pasting posters inside the university campus criticizing the Union Government’s action on Kashmir by withdrawing the special status to the Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcating the state.

Official sources said 30 students of the University had allegedly criticised the BJP Government’s action on Kashmir recently and had also pasted small notices and posters in the university campus.

The CUT registrar therefore sought an explanation from 30 students including five from J and K on August 9 and gave them three days to reply to his notice.

According to some students who have received the notice, since 2017 they used to discuss general topics in addition to their routine academic subjects, in a group nicknamed “Independent Speakers” during the evenings.

This was known to the University authorities including professors and other teaching professionals in campus. They had a discussion on Kashmir issue to create awareness-cum-understanding of the whole issue among the students, and the authorities misunderstood the students’ efforts. They categorically denied having any role in pasting the wall posters and small notices, condemning the Centre’s actions.

Since the University campus has round-the-clock security drill, no one can paste posters; it is neither easy, without others coming to know about it, especially the security staff, the students said.

Some ‘vested interests’ that too persons who are acting in a one-sided way on political issues have attempted to needlessly blame them, the students said and appealed the University administration to inquire the issue in depth and render justice to them. The incident has taken the otherwise quiet campus by storm.
