Hyderabad: Diabetic Dyslipidemia has been recognised as the most important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in type 2 diabetic patients. It was found that 97 per cent of the patients had abnormalities in at least one plasma lipid level in a study conducted by Vaagdevi College of Pharmacy in Warangal, featuring 108 diabetic patients.

The HbA1c test, i.e. regulated hemoglobin, is normally conducted to understand average blood sugar levels. The study concluded that patients in good glycemic group (HbA1c<7%) was less, as opposed to the bad glycemic control group.

P. Sudhakar Reddy, an endocrinologist, says, “There are certain parameters for triglyceride, cholesterol and fat  lipid levels in one’s blood. Compared to the general population, diabetic patients generally have high or low cholesterol lipids and high triglyceride levels. This happens because of their insulin deficiency and high blood sugar levels.”

According to medical experts, diabetic patients should be treated as if they have already had a heart attack. Sunil Kapoor, a cardiologist ,says “Treating diabetes is not enough. Platelets and lipids must also be treated. Diabetic dyslipidemia is coming into the limelight now and therefore a lot of anti-lipid drugs have come into the market to regulate triglyceride and cholesterol levels.”
