Landslips destroy houses in Idukki

Kottayam: Heavy rain and winds caused widespread destruction in Idukki district on Monday. Many houses were damaged in landslips that occurred at places like Munnar town, Ikka Nagar and  Nallathanny estate.    Two shops were destroyed near the RC church in the town.  The  rest house constructed by the Munnar panchayat was destroyed in  a landslip. Vehicular traffic was disrupted after trees fell on the road.    Electric connections and mobile networks were cut off  for a long time.    

A four-storey building collapsed   on the Anachal – Munnar route near  Althara. The building was constructed for a home stay.  However, there were no casualties as there  was none in the building when the incident occurred.   A tree fell over the house of Narayanan at Chethikudy near Rajakkad B division. Narayanan, who was present in the house,  escaped miraculously.

The Thiruvananthapuram - Korba Express train stopped service after a tree fell over the railway track at Mandiram junction, near Kottayam,  on Monday evening. The district administration declared holiday to all educational institutions except professional colleges in Kottayam, Kanjirapally and Meenachil taluks on Monday.
