Hyderabad: The Centre has proposed to supply of piped natural gas (PNG) to four districts — Khammam, Medak, Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda — with an estimated investment of about Rs 600 crore in five years. The state government has to provide land at concessional rates for creating city gas distribution (CGD) infrastructure such as CNG stations. The Centre has said 1.75 lakh LPG cylinders in the state can be diverted to rural areas once PNG supply is made available in the districts. The project is part of the Centre’s effort to reduce pollution in urban areas. The Centre has identified 140 possible geographical areas in 21 states where work to develop CGD network can be started.

The Centre has said that promoting the use of natural gas in automobiles, industries, commercial units and households will reduce air pollution in the cities and nearby areas by a significant amount as natural gas is the cleanest fuel. The Centre has said that PNG in households will provide hassle-free handling and there will be uninterrupted supply. It will be safer operation as compared to LPG. The PNG will free up space in the kitchen and there will be nil pilferage.
