Bengaluru: It was Yamaraja (the God of Death) on the road in the city on Tuesday, telling people to adopt safer ways of driving, lest they would become his guests.

The Halasuru Gate traffic police, in an innovative move to create awareness on the use of helmets, had roped in 'Yamaraja'.

The mace-wielding man clad in the traditional outfit of Yamaraja intercepted people riding bikes without helmets near the Town Hall on Tuesday and gave them a piece of advice about safety and uses of helmets. The traffic police have been conducting lectures in schools and colleges and street-plays, to create awareness about traffic rules as part of the road safety month being observed in July.

The Yamaraja, Veeresh, a theatre artiste performing Hindu mythology-based dramas, stopped motorists and reminded them of the importance of sticking to road rules. After intercepting mostly young motorists, Yama waved his mace in the air, warning them that he would not spare them. Yama also rode pillion on those motorcycles that were driven recklessly, which was an indication that those driving negligently would accompany him.
