William, Kate pay homage at Amar Jawan Jyoti in India Gate
Never forgetting those who have made their ultimate sacrifice for India, reads the message accompanying the wreath.
New Delhi: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid respect Mahatma Gandhi on Monday in Delhi on the second day of their weeklong royal tour of India. Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, bowed their heads as they stood in front of a memorial for Gandhi. They then toured a museum near the spot where Gandhi was assassinated in 1948.
During the day, Prince William and Kate also visited the India Gate here and paid homage to martrys at Amar Jawan Jyoti, a structure with eternal flames to commemorate Indian soldiers killed in the defence of their country.
"Never forgetting those who have made their ultimate sacrifice for India," reads the message accompanying the wreath laid by the royal couple at the memorial which is canopied by the India Gate.
With the sombre tune of military bands playing in the background, the royal couple stood in silence in front of the memorial. Unveiled in 1931, the India Gate commemorates the soldiers of the undivided Indian Army who had laid their lives in World War I and the Anglo-Afghan war.
Earlier, on the second day of their India visit, the royal couple touched down in the national capital around 2.20 PM, the official handle of Kensington Palace tweeted.
Kate wore a cream dress by Emilia Wickstead in her first outing in the city. A reception will be hosted at the residence of the British High Commissioner here in the evening. The couple is on a seven-day tour of India and Bhutan, aimed at building up strong bonds with the two countries.
