Hyderabad: The revenue from mining minerals in Telangana state has increased by 200 per cent over the last eight years. Revenue from the Telangana region was Rs 1,207.82 crore in 2010-11. It increased to Rs 3,704.38 crore by the end of 2017-18 and is expected to be higher by the end of this financial year.

Telangana state has rich mineral deposits and is the only state in south India that has vast coal deposits. The state government earns well from coal, as well as granite and limestone, which are used in construction.

Granite is in great demand across the globe and there are about 723 granite cutting and polishing units in Telangana. Limestone is mainly used in cement plants. There are about 21 cement plants in the state.

A senior official in the Mines and Geology department said, “There are several reasons for increase in the revenue. Earlier, mining used to take place but it was illegal. The department was helpless because of political pressure. Now, as everything is online, there is no scope for corruption and illegal mining. The government was very keen on mining and curbed illegal mining activities. The demand from the end user is also increasing every day as development is going on.”
