Tamil Nadu govt urged to appeal against acquittal in rape case
Hairdressers all over the state closed shops in protest against the court verdict as the victim was the daughter of one of them
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State government has been urged to go on an appeal against the acquittal of those accused of raping and brutally electrocuting a 12-year-old daughter of a hairdresser from Kurumpatti village in Dindigul district in April, 2019.
DMK President M K Stalin, in a Facebook post, said the incident confirmed that the State had become an unsafe place for women and wanted the government to get justice for the family of the girl by going on an appeal.
He said hairdressers all over the State were closing down their salons in protest against the court verdict since the victim was the daughter of one of them in Dindigul district.
Alleging that the State government had failed to furnish adequate evidence in the court to ensure the conviction of the accused, Stalin pointed out how the persons who caused the death of college girl Sarika Shah were punished during the DMK regime.
Makkal Needhi Maiyam, too, demanded the government to go on an appeal and punish the culprits without delay. 'Justice delayed is justice denied,' said the Maiyam’s Adi Dravida welfare wing state secretary Poovai Jagadeesh Kumar A in a statement.
