Chennai: Welcoming the Madras High Court verdict cancelling the tenders issued for development of village roads without the permission of the elected local bodies, DMK President M K Stalin warned district collectors that they would not be able to escape the clutches of law if they connive with the State government in its alleged corrupt practices.

“The government should do away with the practice of issuing e-tenders by using the Collectors to do the job and entrust the responsibility with the local bodies,” Stalin said in a statement on Friday.

He said the order by Justice Anand Venkatesh was a knock on the knuckles of the government that tried to usurp the power of the local bodies and made a bid to indulge in the loot by using the district collectors as its handmaidens.

“It was totally unfair on the part of the government to make a bid to usurp all the powers of the local bodies in fixing electricity lights and laying of drinking water pipelines,” Stalin added.
