Karimnagar: The police are often reluctant to act in what are wrongly called ‘honour killings’ (since no honour worth the name is involved) because they say they are under pressure from both sides. They thus meekly put it down as a 'suspicious death'.

Given this attitude, it is not surprising that a series of such killings have erupted across Telengana. Social activists are defining these murders as caste killings as caste and caste discrimination lies at the root of such barbaric murders.

Police think twice before filing cases in such incidents as they are under pressure from both the communities involved. Political leaders also jump in very often with an eye on their vote banks that are largely caste based.

The killings are not just between the Dalits and upper castes, but also between the different communities of Backward castes.

If police take strong action, it will send a strong signal that perpetrators will be punished.
