Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for APEPDCL’s und-erground electrical cable works at Pandurangapu-ram 33/11 kv sub-station in Visakhapatnam on Monday.

APEPDCL chairman and managing director H.Y. Dora that the havoc of Hudhud had played a catalyst-type role in the conception and implementation of Andhra Pradesh Disaster Recovery Project (APDRP), apart from other recurring natural calamities along the coastline of the state.

The state government has formulated APDRP with financial assistance from the World Bank.

Visakhapatnam is the first city in the state, where underground electrical cabling works are being taken up.

“The work involves conversion of existing 20 sub-stations out of the total 72 sub-stations in the city with 675 kms underground cable at a cost of '760 crore in three packages. The period of execution would be 18 months and two lakh households will benefit after completion,” Mr Dora said.

The network will be practically unaffected by cyclones or natural calamities, hence it’s resilient to natural disasters. This can save  public lives and property during calamities.

It also saves crores of rupees required for res-toration of damaged overhead electrical networks during every calamity. It would further help in continuous power supply as well as provision of alternative supply for emergency services.

MVP Colony, Shivaji Park, Peda Waltair, Siripuram, KGH, Pandurangapuram, RK Beach, Ramnagar, Dondaparthy, Maddilapalem and Port are some of the areas where underground electrical cable works will take place in the first phase of this project.
