Debate on Constitutional Law: 4 Tamil Nadu varsity students in finals

Tiruchy: As many as 73 students representing various educational institutions in Tamil Nadu (except Chennai and Puducherry) participated in the Comparative U.S.-India Constitutional Law Debate conducted at The Tamilnadu National Law University, here on Friday by the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai and Loyola College. The debate aims to foster greater respect and understanding of the constitutional values shared by the world’s oldest and largest democracies.

Retd Justice Dr Akbar Ali, Ms. Geetha Ramaseshan, Attorney, High Court of Madras, Mr. Moulik D. Berkana, Cultural Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate General in Chennai, and Mr. N.L Rajah Nangavaram, senior advocate, Madras High Court, graced the valedictory and announced the top four Tamil Nadu students who will debate against their peers from Karnataka and Kerala during the final debate round in Chennai on September 14.

The following four were selected from round two and they will participate in the final debate at Chennai on September 14.

Bala Aditya of National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, Vignesh Hariharan, and Jumana Kader of Sastra University, Thanjavur, and Devdipta Das of Tamil Nadu National Law University, Tiruchy.

In his address Moulik D. Berkana, Cultural Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate General in Chennai said, “we see this debate among undergraduate students as an exercise itself in democratic thought and free expression.  India and the United States share enduring interests and values and our partnership stand upon a shared commitment to democracy and the rule of law.”

The winner of the final round in Chennai will receive a MacbookPro as the first prize and subscriptions to prominent resource databases about law, and a trophy.  All the participants will also receive participation certificates.
