According to police sources, M.S. Ilangesh--waran (47) of Jayanthi Street, Dr. Sethapathy Nagar, Velachery had gone to his native village in Sivaganga district on Friday night with his family.

Chennai: In a shocking incident in the city, unidentified persons broke into a house in Velachery and burgled nearly 200 sovereigns of gold and Rs 7 lakh cash, on Friday night.

According to police sources, M.S. Ilangesh--waran (47) of Jayanthi Street, Dr. Sethapathy Nagar, Velachery had gone to his native village in Sivaganga district on Friday night with his family. The next morning, he received a phone call from one of his neighbours saying the doors of his house were open.

Shocked by the news, Ilangeshwaran called his friend and asked him to check the house. “The friend went in and checked the bureau and others places and an estimated 200 sovereigns of gold and '7 lakh cash may have been stolen from the house,” the police said.

Ilangeshwaran informed the Velachery police station about the incident telephonically and police rushed to the spot and collected evidence. Meanwhile, Ilangeshwaran returned to the city and filed a complaint with Velachery police. A case has been registered and an investigation is on.
